Day 3

We were hoping to have had a good nights sleep and wake refreshed this morning, but it wasn’t to be-we were rudely awakened during the night by the local wildlife. Cat fights, dog howls and cheeky monkeys kept us awake, with the monkeys even making it into our hallway and one of our rooms!! Thankfully they scarpered before we saw them in person. As a result, we were bleary eyed and in need of sleep at the breakfast table but had funny stories to share from the night before!

This morning we had the privilege of visiting 3 family homes in the slum settlement of Kibera. This is the fourth largest slum in the world with hundreds and thousands of people living there (somewhere between 250,000-1,000,000 people).

This was such a humbling and moving experience. To be welcomed so warmly by families who are in extreme poverty, struggling to put food on their tables and to pay for their children to be in school, was such an honour. They shared their lives with us, complete strangers and welcomed us with so much openness. We have been challenged, humbled, inspired and broken hearted today. We have come away asking God to break our hearts for what breaks His and asking how we can make a difference. What struck us most was the peace and contentedness of the people we visited when they have so little and their trust in God as their sustainer. What a mind blowing day.

Please join us in praying for Maurice, Xerxes and Nancy and their families. A particular prayer need right now is for Nancy’s daughter Philippa and her safety. Thank you.

After lunch, we visited Nairobi city centre to see the sights and culture here. We have enjoyed the busyness of the streets, particularly the wild and entertaining driving!  Tuc Tuc trucks and motorbikes carrying every thing possible and weaving in and out of moving traffic. It is a sight to behold and would certainly be a challenge to drive in, although there are members of the team who would like to be given the chance! Sadly, we have been strictly forbidden by Claire who has put together our risk assessment and safety plan!

We want to take this time to acknowledge and say a huge thank you to Nairobi Chapel who are hosting us and to Pastor Rhoda. They have made us extremely welcome, organised a wonderful program for us to get involved with and we are loving being part of them this week.

Thank you also to you all for following our days. We appreciate you and your prayers. Ali
